Overview

Nestled in the charming town of Charlevoix, Michigan, That French Place offers an authentic glimpse into classic French café culture. This cozy eatery, located on Bridge Street, is a haven for both locals and visitors seeking a genuine taste of France through its thoughtfully curated menu. With a focus on crepes and pastries, the restaurant strikes a perfect balance between sweet and savory, delivering fresh, flavorful dishes that feel both comforting and refined.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the variety of crepes, from the simple yet satisfying homemade caramel and egg & cheese to more complex options like the buckwheat crepes filled with caramelized onion, farm-fresh eggs, spinach, and mushroom paired with feta. These creations are crafted with care, reflecting a genuine appreciation for traditional French ingredients and techniques. Alongside, items like the Ham and Cheese Crepes, Charlevoix Quiche Lorraine, and Breton Cakes expand the menu’s appeal, ensuring something for every palate.

What elevates the experience beyond the food is the warm, attentive service and an atmosphere that feels both intimate and lively. The staff’s friendliness and their efforts to streamline ordering—particularly during busy times like the Venetian Festival—make every visit smooth and inviting. The interior may be compact, but this only adds to the café’s charm, encouraging patrons to grab a crepe to go or find a quiet spot nearby to savor the offerings.

Beverages complement the fare expertly, with standout touches such as lattes fortified with coffee ice cubes, preserving flavor without dilution. Whether it’s a robust Americano or a creamy cappuccino, the drink menu supports the food well, rounding out a satisfying visit. While the coffee garners mixed reviews, the pastries—from the flaky croissants to the decadent chocolate chip cookies and delicate macaroons—are consistently praised and worth sampling.

That French Place caters to a wide audience—from casual passersby looking for a quick coffee and pastry, to food lovers eager for a unique breakfast or light meal. Its reasonable pricing, authentic flavors, and authentic French ambiance make it a standout stop in Charlevoix. For those seeking a little bit of France in the heart of Michigan, this spot reliably delivers an experience that’s both genuine and memorable.

Cute little crepe place. Both the sweet and savory crepes were delicious. Was busy during the Venetian Festival but the owners were up-front about the extended wait time and the food was even ready a little early. Will definitely go back when in the area.

Stopped in for coffee and pastries during our stay. We were greeted at the door by an employee who helped organize the line. We found that all employees were patient and helpful and we appreciated their efforts to direct foot traffic to make the ordering experience smooth. The coffee was average, but the pastries were phenomenal. Didn’t get a chance to try the crepes but will definitely come by during our next visit because they looked delicious.

That French Place is the best! Very reasonably priced, my favorite latte is only $4.25! I’ve never had bad service there and their crepes are delicious. Very good atmosphere, and I love that the iced lattes have ice cubes made out of coffee so it never gets watered down. I would definitely recommend!

Extremely friendly and helpful when we admitted it was our first time there. Crepes were great and appreciated the tearaway sleeve to keep all the fixings in. Macaroons were fantastic, too!

The food was incredible!! The had lots of different crepes and pastries to offer. The drinks were pretty good, all iced drinks come with coffee ice cubes which can ruin a tea but overall it was great. The staff was very kind and it did not take long for the food to come out. However, it was kind of cramped inside so I recommend sitting outside or sitting somewhere else in the town. Overall, definitely a 5 star breakfast spot.

Besides the BEST coffee, crepes and pastries, I have to give a huge shout out to all your staff especially Sari and Leolyn! My husband and I go for coffee here every morning in the summer and we wouldn't go anywhere else. The girls are so friendly and it is amazing how they handle the crowds during the busy tourist summer events! You girls are AWESOME!!! Go grab a cup of coffee and a pastry you won't be disappointed.

Amazing food and service. So so glad they had buckwheat crepes- they’re gluten free! They were so delicious! Everything this shop serves is good and the staff is super friendly. Love the vibe of this shop. It takes a bit for your food to come out- but it’s worth the wait!

That French Place really is THAT PLACE! Incredible sweet and savory treats for everyone. Love that their coffee drinks are all made in house and don’t taste fake-syrupy at all. You can tell that they’re locked into their craft when you look behind the counter and see them whipping up the items for the display case. No inside seating, but plenty of outdoor seats and they pack things up nicely for to-go orders. Don’t leave without trying one of their quiches or cookies!
